Here are some thoughts about why people might feel guilty, why guilt is pointless, and what to do. Firstly, it’s often said that the mother’s place is in the wrong. Parents are criticised if their child has problems or misbehaves, but there is very little help for how you actually do the job of bringing up children and supporting child development. If your child has a tantrum in the supermarket, you don’t get people asking if they can help you. They either avoid you or tut at you. Being criticised usually makes people feel guilty.
