Categories: Featured, Mental Health Courses Across The UK, USA, Australia & Canada, No Video or Map - Video Course - Template, Somatic Based Therapy Courses, Somatic Psychology Therapy Training, Trauma Therapy Courses, Video Therapy Courses Tag: Speaker: Dr Arielle SchwartzOften the most persistent trauma symptoms are connected to events for which our clients have no clear memory. Perhaps they were told that their life is a result of an unwanted pregnancy, they endured medical complications at birth, grew up neglected or suffered child abuse. In addition to these memories, some clients are unable to remember traumatic events that occurred later in life. Such preverbal and nonverbal memories – which are maintained as psychophysiological arousal and affective states called implicit memories – typically do not have associated words or a clear and coherent narrative. Rather, these manifest as flashes of images, disconnected fragments or uncomfortable physical sensations with no known cause. Addressing the verbal or narrative component of memories may allow the narrative to change but will not address disturbing sensations that dominate and interfere with our clients’ lives. Most importantly, therapists may ask, is healing possible if a client is unable to remember their traumatic events?

SKU: e-learning course: Somatic Therapy: Interventions to Enhance Embodiment in Trauma Treatment. Price of the ticket includes VAT and applicable taxes. Categories: E-learning, Featured Tag: Speaker: Dr Arielle SchwartzSomatic Therapy emphasizes body awareness as an essential part of psychotherapy. This is especially beneficial in the treatment of PTSD when symptoms involve physiological distress, affect dysregulation, or dissociation. Traditional approaches to therapy attend to the cognitive and emotional aspects of clients’ lives, while the somatic experience is often left out of the room. Our bodies need to process stressful and traumatic events through breath and movement. Unfortunately, we are often taught to sit still and override movement impulses. As a result, the biological effects of stressful or traumatic events tend to persist long after events have passed. “Talk therapy” can perpetuate this culture of stillness unless the therapist has the training and skills to integrate the body into psychotherapy. Interventions to enhance embodiment in trauma treatment expand the therapeutic experience beyond where words can take a client.

Such trauma could have been chronic sexual, psychological and physical abuse, neglect, intimate partner violence or situations that involved captivity – resulting in extended periods of terror, fear and severe dysregulations of affect and arousal.

While traditional approaches to therapy attend to the cognitive and emotional aspects of clients’ lives, the somatic experience may often remain unattended. As therapists, we may find that modality-specific therapeutic approaches that do not incorporate non-verbal and somatic communications can have limited effectiveness for clients with somatization symptoms, developmental trauma, dissociative defences, or debilitating feelings of shame. At the same time, we recognise that therapeutic interventions aimed at enhancing embodiment in trauma therapy can significantly expand the therapeutic experience beyond where words can take a client.
