“Relationships don’t always make sense. Especially from the outside.”
– Sarah Dessen, Along for the Ride
Working therapeutically with couples presents a unique set of challenges – most of which stem from the fact that partners do not enter into a relationship as blank slates – but as a culmination of experiences and influences, attachment patterns and personality types. To be effective, a couples’ therapist must not only explore the relationship history but also address the lenses and filters that each partner has developed over the years. As couples’ therapists, we need to be mindful of the fact that the relationship is the client, therapy is not one size fits all and the couple system is greater than the sum of its parts.

Full Course Information
At this interactive and practical seminar, acclaimed couples’ therapist and trainer, Kathleen Mates-Youngman explains how we can work with a wide gamut of couple challenges by using her Three-Stage Roadmap, which includes a Relationship Flowchart. Her approach allows us to include a sociological perspective on relationships, balancing theory, clinical expertise, intuition, EQ and mindfulness in a structured step-by-step manner. She specifically explains the therapeutic models and interventions she incorporates at each stage.
Specifically, we consider:
- Early-stage goals for couples’ therapy:
- Developing rapport while creating a healthy, safe and hopeful environment
- Gathering family and relationship history – what is the right way?
- Drawing on Humanistic and Person-Centred models at early-stage
- Mid-stage goals:
- Observing the relationship dance while noting repetitive patterns, attachment styles and schemas
- Addressing conflicts and injuries while creating healthy, sustainable shifts
- Drawing on best practices from Family Systems, the Gottman Method, Emotion-Focused Therapy and Schema Therapy
- Late-stage goals:
- Reviewing shifts and consolidating changes
- If all else fails… the good divorce
- Drawing on key learning points from Mindfulness, Existential Therapy and Positive Psychology
